"The Devi have been on Savine as long as the we wolves have, and longer then the humans. It was the Devi who first made contact with the first mage-humans, who traveled through the Portal from the dream world. At this time the Devi were much like they were today, a scattered folk who lived in large terisi within the deep forests. However, all Devi had the gift of Telepathy then, and it was only in this way that they were able to speak to the humans, for while the Devi are intelligent and can learn to "hear" English, even knowing a language does not help if they cannot speak back.

"A kinship and pact was formed with the humans. Devi joined and aided the building of the first Cities, a wonder than had ne'er been seen. Great fountains and palaces of stone- if you can believe in this stuff, which I never have-" The wolf shakes his head. "Oh well, it's only a myth, so I'll continue. It is true that there were once more humans. For many years the Devi and humans prospered together, each relying on the other. But this peace was not to stay."

"War broke out among the neighboring cities of Reana and Fallion. The Devi have never harmed each other, and, as far as I know, never will. But their bonds were dying of injuries. Finally, the Devi called to the Goddess, the moon, to stop the war, for it threatened to take over the continent.

"The Goddess looked sadly upon her followers, the Devi, of whom she had gifted with telepathy. She then spoke. "Sons and Daughters, I can end this war if you wish, but the consequences will be grave.' And to this the Devi thought, and finally they reached a consensus. The war must be stopped.

"And so the Goddess spoke again. 'Then it will be so.' With a wave of her hand the humans cities retreated into the land of dreams, and the people within them. The Devi cried out, for those were their bonds through telepathy and the stress was too great when the bond was shattered. And so the Goddess did one final thing. With a finger, she removed the bond, the telepathy, from the Devi. She spoke.

"'I have taken away your gift, the gift of hearing beyond words, for it is too great a burden when humans live on this planet. Know this: your lives will be forever changed by the loosening of the bonds, but you still share some link with humans. But it is breakable by your own hand, for I have seen enough of your suffering, and there may come a day in which I cannot help you in your time of need. How you choose to relate to the humans left here is your decision to make, but choose wisely based upon the individual rather than the whole."

The wolf grins, and speaks again. "That's how it ends, I think. The Devi cannot be who they once were, before the people came from the Portal, because their Telepathy is shattered. But it is said that when a human dies, his telepathic bondmate Devi dies with him. I suppose that's why the Goddess shattered the telepathy, so that there can't really be a bond anymore. But, hey, don't take it too hard, it's only a myth." He shrugs his shoulders and nods back to the Devi.
