In the Devi system there are five orders: Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Mind. Within each order are four separate colors, each relating to that order. The Mind are considered the highest order; the Earth, Air, Fire and Water orders are all of the same rank. Mind: Mind are the highest order of the system. They are often the leaders and philosophers of Devi society. In this order are four types: Aether, Dream, Light, and Soul. Mind Devi are the only ones to retain telepathy (one mile is the maximum telepathic range). Aether: Aethers are one of the rarest of all Devi. An Aether is always at least a Minor Lord; if he or she is born lower then that, then the apostrophe is added after the devi's birth. An Aether knows his/her rarity and takes pride in their rank. Both their wings and their body are white, and their eyes are sky blue. Aethers are the strongest of all Devi in telepathy; they can telepathically speak to anyone within one mile. Dream: Dreams are idealists and thinkers. Often Dream devi are the philosophers; this is generally encouraged of them. Dreams have strong telepathy, but only when the person or animal in question is asleep- thus their name. Dream Devi are pale blue with yellow wings. Dreams are the most common of the Mind order, but remember that the mind order is the least common of the orders. Light: Lights are strong speakers and, like all of the Mind devi, quite intelligent. They can be found as spiritual leaders and court members of the Devi. Lights have weak telepathy as a hatchling, but their skill improves with age and training. These Devi are white with blue wings and green eyes. Soul: Soul Devi are just as rare as the Aethers, if not more so. Each one is unique in appearance and personality. The soul Devi take a position as benefits their personality and talents. Soul Devi range from weak to strong telepathy, depending on the individual. Earth: Earth Devi are the scouts and food gatherers. All earth devi are adept at blending in and camouflaging into their environment. In this order are 4 types: Land, Life, Metal, and Wood. Life: Life Devi are the experts at plant and animal life, particularly which foods are poisonous and which are tasty. A life spends his or her time up in the canopy of the forest, where they easily blend in with the flowers and such. Some life devi prefer the meadow. Life are the rarest of the Earth order. A life is leaf green with yellow eyes and wings. Land: If you didn't know where he or she was already, spotting a Land Devi could be tough. These Devi spend most of their time gathering food from the forest floor, where their green wings appear to a predator as just leaves on a plant, and their brown body as part of the ground. The only thing that might give away this Devi is their bright white eyes. Metal: Metal have never quite "fit" into the Earth order. Although they were common when humans still lived on the planet, their numbers have dwindled as their talents lie in scribing instead of in hiding and gathering food. Metal Devi are dark gray with blue eyes. Wood: Wood Devi are more energetic than squirrels and just as fast in their native home, the trees. Wood devi make up the bulk of the food gathering force. They are cheerful and chatty, although they, like most Devi, lack he telepathic skill. Wood devi are a uniform tan with blue eyes. Air: The Air order has traditionally been a Guardian order. Air Devi adhere to a strict honor system and consider it their duty to watch over the lands and the Aether of the Realm. The Air order consists of four types: Wind, Moon, Eclipse, and Cloud. Eclipse: Eclipse Devi are the rarest of the Air order. They are quick and dexterous, and often take over highly coveted positions in the guardian areas- as leaders, personal guardians to the Aether of the Realm, etc. When an Eclipse engages in battle, it is almost always to the death. These Devi would rather kill themselves in a fight then surrender. Eclipse are black with orange wings. Wind: Wind Devi are quick and dexterous like their cousins, the Eclipses, but prefer to engage in only non-lethal fights. Because they do not wish to kill they learn moves which will disable their opponent rather then kill him/her. Winds are also expert skydancers and some prefer entertaining to the guardian role. Wind devi are purple with yellow wings. Cloud: Cloud Devi are strong, but not as dexterous as the other Air Devi. They are more common then the Eclipse and Wind, but less common then the Moon Devi. They do day patrol, as the moon devi do night patrol. Cloud devi are white with velvety gray wings and bright blue eyes. Moon: Moon Devi have excellent night vision, which makes them ideal as the night border patrol. They are also the most common of the Air Devi. Some Moon devi show priestess talent and are spirited away to the Water order to join the Goddess ranks. Moon devi are pale blue with white wings and yellow eyes. Fire: The Fire order is the order of war. Before there was war between the humans, the devi knew nothing of war and so this group was the skydancers and entertainers. In a non-war situation, these Devi either become hunters, guardians, or skydancers. Fire Devi are some of the strongest of the Devi species. The fire order has 4 types: Lava, Smoke, Flame and Sun. Flame: Flame devi are charismatic and full of bravado. They are the most intelligent of the Fire order, which makes them generally good leaders. Flame Devi who do not show signs of leadership are asked to attempt Skydancing instead. Flame devi are the rarest of the Fire order. These Devi are gray with red wings and eyes. Lava: Lava Devi are strong, and, while not as intelligent as the Flame Devi, are not easily angered. They are also slightly larger then the other devi. These devi are more common then the smoke devi, but less common then the Flame devi. Lava Devi are red with brown wings. Smoke: Smoke Devi are usually moody. Those who are not have quick tempers. They are also, for the most part, nocturnal and so their attacks are usually scheduled for after the sun has set. These Devi are gray with purple wings and yellow eyes. Sun: Sun Devi are quick and nervous, but also the best pack fighters of all Devi. They are the most common of the Fire Order. These devi are most often found as hunters and war packs in the dry grasslands as their yellow-body coloring and white wings hide well in tall grass. They have bright blue eyes. Water: The Water order has a strong connection to the moon, which is important in Devi Society. Members of this order are usually healers, shamans, or storytellers, although a few have become leaders as well. This order has four types: Rain, River, Surface, and Sea. Rain: Young rain devi are usually curious about the world and the way it works. Rain Devi can still speak telepathically to the moon, although she rarely responds. Rain are the rarest of the Water order, and are usually leaders of a Goddess Pack. They are dark blue with pale yellow wings and faint spots running down their back. River: River Devi are energetic and often put this energy to good use, going on quests for the Terisi until they are older. River Devi who show the talent of remembering things well may be taught the art of storytelling. River are the second rarest of the water order, and are dark blue, paler underneath, with dark gray wings. Surface: Surface Devi are prone to mood swings, as their name might suggest: the water's surface may be calm and reflective, like a mirror, or it may be rough and white-edged, like strong waves. They specialize in divination, because the world around them is willing to whisper its secrets to them only. They are both sea-green and blue-gray in body, with green and blue wings. Sea: Sea devi are the most common of the water order. Their connection to the moon is not as strong as their kin, but their patience and wisdom make them good teachers, and so they are always in demand. Sea devi are a ocean blue with a faint green pattern running across both wings and body. |
